Keep in Touch

As many of you may have noticed, 2016 was a year full of on-and-off communication from me. Mostly off, though. My vow this year, and in years to follow, is to maintain a more open line of communication. I want you to be able to get to know me, as well as my stories and characters. You can probably take that as my new year’s resolution (even though I don’t make those). I’m going to start out by sharing things I identify with more often.

Part of the reason I was so… well, gone, is because of illness, both physical and mental. I live with chronic depression and overwhelming anxiety most days out of the year, and symptoms pertaining to fibromyalgia don’t much help with that. In addition, at the end of January 2016, my family suffered a terrible loss brought on by the hands of one of our own. Due to the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, I won’t go into the details except to tell you how it affected me—I was left with night terrors, stronger and longer bouts of depression, and the stress the incident caused me had physical repercussions for my fibromyalgia.

Now, on to the happy stuff!

Keep in Touch, Mari is the new theme of my monthly newsletter, which I will be keeping up with. Shocking, right? I’m writing this on Christmas Eve 2016, and immediately afterward I’ll be coming up with content ideas for the first newsletter, which will be sent out at the end of January. I’m on top of this for once, it would seem.

What can you expect from my newsletters?

This is important to me, because, while it would be amazing to sell tons and tons of books, what’s more important to me is building a relationship with my readers. That was my goal from the first moment I decided I wanted to pursue publishing, and it has maintained priority as I continued down this path. My problem with keeping up with my social media presence is that I never know what to say! I constantly second-guess anything I try to write, and it’s not conducive to actually posting things. Anxiety sucks. I never thought that my social anxiety would extend to online socializing, but there we have it. Time to just be my silly self and hope for the best, huh?

Anyway, this post has gone on long enough.

No, wait, I lied!

I previously posted that I plan to offer a free serial book to my readers as a way of saying thank you for sticking with me so long, despite it taking such a long time for me to get The Melancholy Storm out to you. For a while, I considered offering it on Wattpad (I even shared a promo with the Wattpad logo on it), but I recently had the idea that maybe I could send it through a separate newsletter instead. If you wouldn’t mind, I’d appreciate your input on this below.

I’m still toying with the idea, and Forever & Always is still a ways away from beginning its weekly installments, but I’d like to have the plans for it cemented in time for it to start. Writing will start in February, after The Melancholy Storm is complete.

Would you prefer to read chapters on Wattpad or in your inbox via newsletter?

Speaking of plans…

Nothing is set in stone, but here’s the tentative order in which I’ll be writing and publishing the next handful of books. It might change depending on new ideas that hit me, but here you go!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

It’s such a relief to be back in the swing of things. I feel like I lost a full year battling various things in my life (more on that later, I promise), but I’m finally feeling like my old self, and that means more writing and creating things.

However, I never lost track of all the plans and ideas I have for the handful of books I already had in my line-up, and I’m more excited than ever to get those written and out to you. I just… I’ve been in such a funk the past year that I wasn’t able to write—I just kept falling into a dark hole whenever I tried.

I’m still planning the free serial Forever & Always, but don’t worry about it getting in the way of The Brimstone Series—I’m only writing one day out of the week on F&A, while the other six days will be devoted to current book projects.

Speaking of those, I have a new trilogy planned that I’m psyched about, and I’m hoping to get the first book out in October. But again, don’t worry—I won’t let it take you away from Brimstone for too long. In fact, here’s what my schedule looks like, as planned…

That’s only writing about two hours a day, so I can spend some free time taking care of keeping the connection going with you.

Now, that’s enough of book talk. I’m going to try my damnedest to keep up with posting a blog every two weeks, and I’ve already got the next one scheduled. It won’t always be about the books, because I want everyone to get to know me, too. So keep an eye out for that. I’m excited!

I wish you the best in the upcoming year!

Synopsis:
When Ashlyn escaped the hell she was dragged into, she
thought her life was over, damaged. Then came along the one man she couldn’t
have. Never mind that he was the only person she had ever felt such a
connection to, the only man she felt that she could trust. So what did she do?
She denied those feelings, fought them. Because what use is a Forbidden Love to
a broken girl?
Everything that had happened in Drake’s life had led to that exact
moment and things were finally on track, being a prospect for the club that
saved him made him more thankful than he could ever explain. The brothers, his
family gave him the chance that no one else would. And as soon as he saw her he
was willing to throw that all away. So decisions had to be made… His loyalty to
his family or his love for the girl who he would give his life to protect. Even
though it was Forbidden, Drake had never felt anything more real…
Excerpts:

Excerpt 1
“Do we really have to leave?” Ashlyn asked as
she ran her hands through her blonde, wavy hair. I was leant against the
communal bathroom door watching her as she got ready for the party. She was
wearing a white summer dress that hit her knees, strappy sandals and a white
short cardigan that covered up her scars on the top of her back. Those ones
weren’t very noticeable, you wouldn’t see them unless you knew about them.
“Yes, Prez’s orders,” she looked down at her
hands. “What is it?” I stalked into the room until I was pressed against her
back and looking at her through the bathroom mirror.
“We’ve been safe here, no drama and no
danger. I just feel like that’s going to change once we leave.” Her eyes connected
with mine and I saw unshed tears forming.
“I’m not going to lie to you, it might. But
we’ve out stayed our welcome.” She took a deep breath and plastered on a fake
smile.
Excerpt 2
I was now pacing the bar area, worrying my bottom
lip between my teeth and clenching and unclenching my hands. That woman Belinda
said a gift would arrive in two hours and it was now almost eleven in the
morning. I had a bad feeling and didn’t know what I should do.
My head snapped up when the Prez left his office
and headed for the main doors, Rooster, Wiz, Henry and Drake all followed him
and it took me a moment to get my feet moving again, I hurried after them only
to be stopped by Denise.
“No, you can’t go out there.” I was stunned
by what she was telling me and it took a moment to register.
“I need to see what it is.” I went to step
past her and she blocked my path. “Denise.”
“I’m sorry, no.” I went to dodge her again
when large hands clapped around my waist and lifted me off my feet. I looked
over my shoulder to see that Drum had picked me up and was carrying me into the
bar. He placed me on the sofa and Denise sat beside me.
“Please just wait for Drake to come back in,
ok?” I nodded, not taking my eyes off the door.
“It’s another woman, isn’t it?” I asked, taking
my eyes off the door to look at Denise and the answer was clear as day on her
face. Her face full of make-up couldn’t hide it from me.

Title: Poison
Series: Wind Dancer, #1
Pages: 193
Genre: Young Adult Dystopian
Date published: August 31, 2015
Synopsis:
Since the night her mother was murdered, sixteen-year-old Rory Gray has known one truth: There are no good Seeders.

In post-apocalyptic Australia, the scientists known as Seeders have built a Citadel surrounded by food-producing regions and populated with refugees from the wars and famine. To maintain their control, the Seeders poisoned the land and outlawed the saving of seeds.

It’s been six years since Rory graced the Seeders’ circus stage as the Wind Dancer and still the scars on her body haven’t healed. Even worse are the scars on her heart, left by a Seeder boy who promised to protect her.

Now the Seeders are withholding supplies from Rory’s region for perceived disobedience. Utilising the Wanderer knowledge she received from her mother, Rory must journey to the Citadel through uninhabitable terrain to plead for mercy.

However, the Citadel isn’t as Rory remembered. The chief plant geneticist is dying and rumours fly that the store of viable seed is dwindling. The Seeders are desperate to find a seed bank they believe Rory can locate, and they will stop at nothing to get it.

To defy the Seeders means death. But Rory has been close to death before–this time she’s learned the value of poison.

Recommended for fans of The Hunger Games, strong protagonists, circuses and nature!

EXCERPT

I run until it feels like my lungs will burst and every drag of air is excruciating. Then I stumble around in the dark for hours until I finally give up and start to climb again. I go up as far as I can, as high as the branches will support me, and wait for the coming dawn.
I’m awoken by the hollowness in my stomach. My eyes are grainy and the light is too bright, but I force them open. I’m way above the first canopy, and this high up, the forest is covered in a layer of mist so dense it could be snow. But no layer of weather would be magical enough to obscure the other sight. High above the treetops, pushing upwards so the tips of the skyscrapers disappear into the clouds, is the Citadel. I hadn’t even noticed it was so close. On this level, the Iron Gates and the six-metre wall surrounding the Citadel are obscured by trees. Besides Warden Tower and the distant gleam from the dome over the Forgotten Garden, the skyline has changed dramatically from what I once knew. Skyscrapers have risen and fallen, and there’s a sense that the entire city is slowly expanding over the mountain it rests on.
It feels wrong to be trying to get back into the Citadel after so long. I barely escaped the first time, and only because I suspect Papa made some kind of untoward deal with the Seeders in exchange for my freedom. Yet seeing it so close, knowing it’s not just a figment of my imagination, fills me with a sense of urgency.
I’m not ready. I don’t have enough information about what I’m getting myself into. So I do the only thing that comes naturally when I’m unsure. I start to climb and don’t stop until the branch I cling to is little more than sapwood. I seat myself with my belly against the tiny leader branch and hug the tree as it sways precariously against the prevailing wind. In this moment, I actually feel like I’m a part of the eternal dance between the earth and the sky. The branch tips horizontally, and I close my eyes and pretend I’m on a ride at the fair that accompanies the circus around the regions.
I smile and then catch myself as a sickening thought occurs to me. Do I really love soaring over the earth, or is it something the Seeders have planted in me by conditioning? If it’s the latter, does it say something about me that I’ve embraced being up so high?

ABOUT THE BOOK

Artist (Redemption Reigns MC, #2)

Author: Juli Valenti
Title: Artist
Series: Redemption Reigns MC, #2
Pages: 193
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Date published: November 8, 2015

Synopsis:
Cecili “Artist” Warren knew what she was getting into when she asked to prospect for Hells Redemption Motorcycle Club. At least, she thought she did. What she hadn’t been prepared for was the grueling training, long working hours at her tattoo shop, and falling for the man who’d tested her limits day after day.
Shakespeare Carter, Vice President of Hells Redemption, was ruthless in all aspects of life – from his role within the club to the demands he placed on Artist. It was no secret he was a hard man, but even ice melted when confronted with fire.
After a close friend of Artist’s is shot during a hit on the club, she becomes determined to seek out retribution. Little did she know that would be much harder than any of them ever expected.
With Shakespeare’s help, can she prove to be as strong as he thinks she is? And, more, will she come out alive on the other side and still recognize herself?

EXCERPT

“How many times do I have to tell you not to lean on your back foot when firin?’ That’s why you’re missin,’” Shakespeare barked, scolding her, and it took everything she had not to bash him in the face with the butt of the rifle.
It had been eight months since Artist had been given her prospect patch and officially started her road into being a member of Hells Redemption. Since then, she’d been put through grueling tasks and training, testing her worth and her dedication to the MC, and to herself. Most days she fell in bed exhausted, too tired to think or relive the days. But some days, days like today, she was almost driven to violence.
“I’m trying, damn it,” she whispered through gritted teeth, re-centering herself to the target and preparing to fire once more.
Since Poet had put Shakespeare, HR’s Vice President, in charge of her gun skills, it was his pleasure to put her through hell. When she got up in the morning, it was a vigorous workout routine before hopping on her 2013 CVO Harley and meeting him at the shooting field about seven miles from the clubhouse. There, he would quiz her on the weapons he brought, put her to task cleaning and putting them together, before spending hours target practicing. From there, she was sent on her way, sore and exhausted, to her day job.
It wasn’t the training, the gruelingly long days, or the chill of the New Mexico winter that bothered her, though. What bothered Artist was the man’s attitude. Shakespeare was constantly on her ass about everything – her feet weren’t perfectly positioned, her arm wasn’t extended the way he wanted it, she was relying on sights instead of instinct. It was irritating as hell. Two months ago, she’d called him on it exactly one time.
“Excuse me, prospect?”
Her blood chilled, immediately cooling her temper at the tone of his voice. Her VP’s face had hardened, an eyebrow raised, framing a dangerous expression. Artist sighed, knowing she’d lost the battle and points before she’d even been given the chance to play.
“Nothing, VP. Sorry.”
The man standing before her seemed impossibly large, his stature almost dwarfing her as he stepped forward. He grabbed the pistol from her hands and leaned in close. “I’ll stop treatin’ you like a fuckin’ idiot when you stop actin’ like one. We’re done for the day. Get gone.”
Artist nodded, her eyes to the grass and dirt at her feet, ashamed to look at him. She knew better than to snap at any of the members, especially him, and it didn’t take a rocket scientist to know he was going to tell Poet. Who, in turn, would tell Titan. The day was getting better and better.
“Oh, and Artist?” he called, causing her to turn back. She swallowed her pride and glanced up at him, meeting his eyes with sheer force of will though fearing the threat that was sure to come. “Free pass this time around – but don’t push me. You won’t like what happens.”

I was probably going to die.I really shouldn’t be surprised. After all, when you hunted evil, supernatural creatures, getting killed was sort of an occupational hazard. But I was good at what I did – really good. And I figured I was still going to die.I watched the Abassy, an iron-toothed man-eating demon, approach riding a dragon. The Abassy was seriously tough shit…and it only had one arm, one eye, and one leg. To make matters worse, its mount was a two-headed, eight-legged, two-tailed dragon. These things were supposed to solely be creatures of the Underworld so how the hell they had gotten out, I had no idea. I had been trying to banish them back, which, despite how powerful the Abassy was, should have been fairly simple. Only what should have been a pretty quick mystical banishment had turned into an all-out clusterfuck of a fight. I laid in the dirt that was slowly being turned to mud, courtesy of all the blood seeping out of my way-too-many wounds. I knew I was in bad shape when I tried to lift my left arm and couldn’t feel anything on that entire side of my body. Breathing slowly in and out, I focused on the sweet musk of the earth all around me and ignored the prevalent metallic twang of all the blood (MY blood) that was every-freaking-where. Forcing myself to stand up…or at least stand hunched over, I decided to wait for the Abassy to make a move rather than expend energy in chasing it.Clearly I had caused some injury to the Abassy and its dragon since I could see that they limped towards me but, even with my enhanced vision, between the pitch black of the night and the dark skin of the creatures I couldn’t see any obvious wound. I figured I had one decent attack left before my body just completely gave up. My right hand gripped the banishment crystal and I willed my left hand to curl around my dagger. The crystal was going to have to do most of the work so my best hope was to distract with the weapon – thankfully I’d had a semblance of foresight to bring an enchanted blade along, which should sting the Abassy even more, provided I could make direct contact. The Abassy stopped and we engaged in a Western-movie-type stare down. For a nanosecond, I almost felt like John Wayne. But before I had time to blink, it rushed at me. I didn’t think, I didn’t breathe. I stabbed blindly with my dagger hand and slid my right hand up towards the Abassy’s chest, underneath the Abassy’s stretched out arm, while twisting my body to avoid the dragon. Searing, jolting pain shot through my body as the Abassy’s dragon clamped down on my right leg with two of its own. I heard muscle rip and felt bones snap. My world started to go dark – even I couldn’t stay conscious after the vicious ass-kicking I had received.

Showers complete, Lucas, Sean, and Kel convince Jackson to join them for video gaming. I’m thankful for the moment away from his little touches, seductive looks, and that damn mouth of his. My mind is almost cleared when Sid calls.
Of course, she’s more interested in the fact that Jackson is in my apartment. And keeping her on topic regarding my budget is practically impossible.
“You do realize you have Jackson Shaw, guitarist of The Forgotten, playing domestic daddy in your apartment, right?”
“Sid,” I use my warning tone, “it’s not like that, and stop referring to him by his full name and job description. It’s creepy.”
“It’s not creepy, Liza. It is panty melting, nipple tightening, hot as fucking hot can get. The fact that you don’t realize this concerns me. Is your vagina working properly?”
“Stop it,” I laugh.
“Perhaps you should have him check under your hood. And when I say hood, I mean clitoral hood,” she deadpans.
“Oh my God, stop it!” I cry out in laughter.
“Should I be jealous?” His voice, next to my unoccupied ear, ensures my vagina is working just fine.
“Sweet Lord of penises, his voice is sexy,” Sid sighs over the phone.
“Jealous of what?” I pull the phone away from my mouth and tilt my head.
“I only want to hear ‘oh my God’ when it’s followed by my name and you coming around my cock.” His tongue flicks the lobe of my ear.
I shiver and tighten my crossed legs.
“That’s it. I’m ruined,” Sid cries dramatically. “No man will ever live up to this.”
“Both of you stop.” My words are breathy and it takes all my strength to lean away from his mouth.
“Pizza!” Lucas shouts, running toward the buzz of the intercom.
Jackson straightens and steps back from me. Taking a deep breath, I move to stand, but his hand on my shoulder stops me. Instead, he walks over to the door, pulling cash out of his back pocket.
“Damn cock blockers,” Sid grumbles.
“Sid!” I scold, but smile.
“Well, damn, the kid just killed the ear porn I was getting,” she whines.
“Don’t you have enough porn already?”
“You can never have enough,” she snorts. “Besides, this was real life rock star ear porn. Girl, I need to freshen up after that.”

Riley Silk, captain of the Warrior’s Ice Hockey team at Dalesburg High, doesn’t think life can be lived if love is present. If there’s two things in life he knows to be true, it’s that love causes pain and hockey is his ticket to a better life. He’s worked hard to maintain his Frozen Silk reputation in order to stay focused on his duties and goals.
Audrey Jacobs, the Warrior’s number one fan, believes life can’t be lived without love. She can find love and beauty in the muddiest of situations. Her best friend, Riley, is under a lot of stress at home, so she does her best to brighten his mood whenever she can.
When lines cross and blur, they struggle to keep control of the simplicity their friendship once held. With Audrey’s outlook on life usually surrounded by light, the growing darkness of her doubts and insecurities threaten to deflect her toward the wrong path.
Can she find her true self before her world burns around her? When truths become lies, can Riley find the strength to fight his way through his own personal darkness that clings to his mind and soul? Can he win this face-off that life has dropped in his zone, or will fate take him out of the game completely?

I growl and force my anger into my next swing. The puck completely misses the net, bouncing off the cement wall.
Audrey’s not leaving this town. Yeah, she’s trying to care for Hannah, but she’s leaving me.
My hopeful heart drops and I kick the bag again, using the blade of the plastic stick to set up the new line of victims. Each puck has a different face.
My father.
For leaving us the way he did for another woman.
He gets another.
He broke my mother’s heart to the point that she’s not even the same woman she was five years ago.
He started this domino effect of bullshit, and for that, he gets a third.
My mother.
For letting a man break her down so badly that she can’t function properly.
She gets another.
She’s forgotten that she’s a mother. I’m not old enough to care for my baby sister properly, not in the parental way she deserves. I still need a mom, but at least I’m old enough to figure things out on my own.
My mother gets another puck just for hurting my baby sister by ignoring her like she does. It smashes into the wall.
Another puck with her face, because it’s her fault that Audrey wants to stay here. Audrey can see that Hannah needs a mother. So why can’t Mom see it?
I kick the bag again, lining up another row.
She gets one more, for bringing another man into our house, causing a whole different world of shit for us.
I tap a puck forward, glaring at it.
This one’s for Ted.
I purposefully miss the net this time. Smashing the puck into the wall so hard I hear it crack as it rattles across the floor.
One more for Ted.
His alcohol addiction nearly ended everything I know and love in one night with his drunken rage.
My mother gets another puck. This one’s for bringing the man that beat her, almost to death, in front of my baby sister last year back into our home. I purposefully crash it into the wall again.
I smash yet another into the cement wall.
For bringing the man who hit my baby sister because she wouldn’t stop crying, back into our lives.
Todd.
For asking my Audrey out and kissing her.
My stick hooks around the last puck.
It gets my face.
For being a coward and not asking my girl to be my girl, for not telling her how I’ve felt for years, for lying, and for hurting her feelings. This puck gets my face for not being a stronger man and calling the police to press charges against Ted.
The puck glances off the post and flies my way.
On instinct, I drop to my knees so I don’t get hit, and hear a soft gasp followed by an echoing thud of a body hitting the floor.

Nivian leaped over the edge of the bridge and landed with a soft tap on the surface of the water. She reached down, pulled the soul of the driver up by the collar of his shirt, and stood him up next to her on top of the water. She took the driver’s hand, palm up, in hers and waved her other hand over his. Pinching the air, she pulled and lifted up to expose his life thread. His wide eyes stared unblinking, hypnotized by the glowing string of light. Nivian reached behind her and grabbed the scythe strapped to her back, and swung. With a slow, deliberate movement, Nivian sliced the human’s life thread. The light formed into a ball and hovered between them. She pulled out a small pocket watch and guided the life energy down to the watch. It sunk into it and disappeared.
She snapped the watch closed and returned it to her pocket. “You should know better than to drink and drive. You could’ve seriously hurt someone.”
He gaped at her, his mouth opened and closed like a fish. “Yes, you really are dead,” she confirmed and gave him an apathetic look as she turned away.
“Are you … the devil?” he managed to sputter.
“No, of course not. I am just the natural order of things,” she said, looking back over her shoulder. “Wait here. Your spirit counselor will be here soon to guide you to your afterlife. I have other jobs tonight.” She spun on her heel and walked away, as she pulled her hood back up over her head and vanished.

Synopsis:
Following his father’s death, Micah Forbes believes he can finally put the family who rejected him and their religious bigotry behind him. In a cruel twist, his older brother calls to tell him he’s inherited their father’s abandoned vacation home.

Micah discovers the house comes complete with a long list of repairs, boxes full of family secrets, and a handful of quirky neighbors. Despite not wanting to get in too deep, he can’t help the spark of interest stirred when the sexy redhead next door offers his help. Everything about the enigmatic Cat Rowland throws Micah off-balance, from his gender-bending sense of fashion to his handy repair skills to his deep spirituality. Before long, Micah is swept up by Cat and his friends, but Cat himself keeps his heart carefully protected.

When Micah’s past and his present collide in a painful way, his self-destructive coping habits threaten to overwhelm him. To save himself, he needs to open his soul and let someone in. Cat has the key to unlock him, if he can let down his guard and trust his faith enough to catch Micah as he falls.

Excerpt

Micah stared up at the old house. It was nicer than he’d remembered, at least on the outside—other than the overgrown lawn and garden. He wondered if there was a lawn mower in the shed. Then he wondered if there was a shed. Just one more thing to worry about. At least he had the entire summer to figure out what he did and didn’t have available to him.
His mind ran through all the possible scenarios of what could go wrong during his tenure there, from the house falling down around him to his friends having a crisis while he was unavailable. He tried not to imagine that the students renting his own home had merely been putting up a front and were actually throwing a wild party even as Micah stood on the front porch of the lake house. None of that would do; they were his way of finding excuses not to stay in Concordia.
While he was thinking about all of that, a voice behind him said, “Hey, there.”
Micah nearly jumped out of his skin. He turned around slowly and came face-to-face with a gingery-blond young man. He was average height, perhaps an inch or two shorter than Micah, and had a wiry build. There was a dusting of freckles across his pale skin, and he had a row of small hoops down one ear. In the other ear, he wore a dangling earring that looked like some kind of leaf. He had on a trendy pair of black knee-length pants and a fitted white t-shirt with a rock band logo Micah didn’t recognize. His gray-green eyes were wide and held a spark of mischief, and his mouth curled upward in a charming smirk.
